about our choirs
The Garland High School Choral Department is comprised of eight performing ensembles involving 230 students. Included in these ensembles is Acappella Choir, Acappella Men’s Choir, Acappella Women’s Choir, Mixed Choir, Treble A Choir, Treble B Choir, Celebration and the Chamber Singers. High performance levels, music literacy, and musical artistry are top priorities for the department. All choirs are consistently awarded Sweepstakes at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contests.
A Cappella Choir
The mainstay of the Choral Department, the Acappella Choir, has been chosen Best in Class in New Orleans, Washington D.C., South Coast and Winter Park Music Festivals. In 1996, the choir was selected to perform at the Southwest Division of the American Choral Directors Convention held in Dallas. In 1993, along with the other GISD High School Acappella Choirs, the Acappella Choir performed the premiere of Psalmfest, conducted and composed by John Rutter in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas, Texas and in Carnegie Hall, New York, NY. Again in 1998, the Garland HS Acappella Choir joined the other five GISD High Schools in a performance in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Dallas, TX, and in Carnegie Hall, New York, NY under the direction of Dr. Andre Thomas. In July 2000, the choir was invited to perform at the International Youth and Music festival in Vienna, Austria. The choir toured Germany and Austria for twelve days, singing, sightseeing, and absorbing a different culture; being embraced by the local people with music being the common language. The trip culminated with the Festival where they were awarded third place. In the summer of 2004, the choir toured Scotland and England with the highlight being a concert in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. The choir again went overseas in June of 2007, touring Salzburg, Vienna, and Prague.
Celebration & Chamber Choir
The Choral Department’s specialized groups, Celebration and the Chamber Singers, represent GHS in the community with numerous performances throughout the year. These small groups perform in elementary schools and for civic organizations. Activities include singing for school events, student assembly shows, a Spring Show, Christmas caroling “Dickens” style, participation at the Madrigal Festival and a Madrigal Dinner.
